Are You Still Using Facebook, Twitter, etc?
The Threat to Democracy IS Facebook
A comment I saw recently:
Why do people act like the solution to this problem is more complicated than “stop using Facebook”?
I had hoped it would be that simple. It’s a bit more complicated:
It has been a year since the Cambridge Analytica Facebook breach. I started this page in May of 2018. There were several updates in 2018 and it continues because the crimes of Zuckerburg et al continue. I had expected the near complete demise of Facebook before the end of the year. Media outlets (most) and politicians, desparate for exposure, even those that critcize Facebook still include the Facebook link and beg for “likes and shares”. And the complaints and data breaches continue to mount. Politicians should be leading people away from this treachery. At the very least politician should be transparent about their investments in social media. I know there is talk about “breaking up big tech” and that will be covered in a separate article.
It is amazing to realize this talk was given in 2010. Eben Moglen gives us an insightful talk about what the social media craze was all about all along. He talks about what’s coming - those “wall-warts” he talks about, those are real and can be had now. They are still DIY for now and I’ll report more about that later.
“…logs showed some 2000 engineers or developers made approximately nine million queries for data elements that contained plain text user passwords.”
Since 2016, Facebook has been paying users ages 13 to 35 up to $20 per month plus referral fees to sell their privacy by installing the iOS or Android “Facebook Research” app. Facebook even asked users to screenshot their Amazon order history page. The program is administered through beta testing services Applause, BetaBound and uTest to cloak Facebook’s involvement, and is referred to in some documentation as “Project Atlas” — a fitting name for Facebook’s effort to map new trends and rivals around the globe.
Unlike Facebook Twitter was started by people with good intentions. Greed, like Facebook itself, came over the entire thing. In the video below Evan Williams glows after the election of Obama, but in 2017 he apologized for Twitter’s role in the election of Donald Trump. Twitter had censored some Hilary content.
This section will be updated. There are details about Twitter - what data accumulation they do, what they have bought, and what they have sold. Have a look at this 2009 video by Evan Williams, glowing after Obama’s win. Notice that none of the examples Williams’ shown in the slides looks like the Twitter in-real-life at the time.

Clever Devil has also created an app called “Ditchbook” to help you off Facebook. (Github)
I don’t use twitter, but twitter is public - and triple-super-tracked, more on this later:
